Is Your Book for Business, Pleasure or a Movement?
Before you look for a publisher, write the first word in your journal, I have one question for you. Is your book for business, pleasure or a movement? Now, it may be your first book and you have many questions about the publishing process and what the book will look like when finished, but before you do that, determine your vision and goal for your book. After 10 years of publishing, 40+ books written, 100+ authors coached and published, I know that this is the most important question to be answered. Whether you sign a contract with a traditional publisher, vanity press or self-publish your book, you are the author and you are the visionary of your book. No matter who you ask or pay to help you, you ultimately determine how far your book will reach. Why? Because readers are investing in you the author and indirectly in the publisher, printer or distributor. Your name is on the front of the book. The publisher’s name is inside or on the back. You are the star of your own book business reality show. So I ask again. Is your book for business, pleasure or a movement?
If your book is for business, it should do three things.
1. Your book should be about some aspect of your business or stand and give voice and credibility to your business and industry
2. Your book should be an additional product to your already existing products or services
3. Your book should be the foundational literary document from which your ideas, methods and opinions on your business are built.
If your book is for pleasure or about your passion, it should do two things.
1. Your book should be about what you love.
2, Your book should be about what consumes your every day existence.
If your book is for a movement, it should do three things
1. Your book should be about what literally moves you.
2. Your book should move others to conversations, engagement and action.
For me, my books are for all three. I want to help people create products and services that will increase their business profits. I want to help people write about and publish what they love. I know that I write and publish what I love. I also want to write about and publish books that move people to action in their own writing, businesses and lives. I want to leave a legacy in the book publishing world long after I am dead and gone. So which is it? Business, Pleasure or Movement.
