VBD Author Spotlight: Marsha A. Malcolm

Victorious By Design is delighted to spotlight award-winning, bestselling author Marsha Malcolm and her new release, So Very… Max!

MUSINGS ON MAX

According to Marsha, “Since I never really expected to be a writer, it isn’t all that strange that I never envisioned myself as a children’s book writer. I am—and have always been—a reader. As a child, I fantasized about writing, but I never really expected anything to come of it until I had something that needed to be shared. Since I have terrible stage fright, I knew I couldn’t count on using my actual voice to speak, so I decided to write a book. My debut novel, “His Last Hope: A Contemporary Christian Romance” was self-published in July, 2015, and has been a real blessing to its readers. I know God used me to reach them, and I am humbled and amazed. The fact that it was named the Christian Small Publisher Romance Book of the Year 2016 was icing on the proverbial cake.

Its publication posed a very specific challenge, however; my son, who has been reading since the age of two, saw that I had written a novel, and became jealous that it wasn’t a book he could read (and believe me, he tried!). “When are you going to write a book for me?” he would ask. So I decided to give it a try. I’d read Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling” as a child and loved it, but when I read it with my son, I became concerned that everyone really began to appreciate the ‘ugly duckling’ only after he had been transformed into the beautiful swan. I wondered what would have become of him if he’d stayed… well… ugly. Would no one have learned to appreciate him? Would no one have seen his value? And that was when my character “Max” was born.

Max - Back cover

Max is a foal, but he’s also essentially the ‘duckling’ who would never blossom into a swan. He is the ‘duckling’ who needs to learn to appreciate himself, ‘flaws and all,’ and to see what no one else sees when they look at him. My children’s story So very… Max! explores the idea that the very things that make us ‘different’ from everyone else are also the things that make us ‘special.’ While it’s not necessarily about people with special needs, it can be seen as an invitation for families to begin a discussion about those who do have special needs. It also encourages readers to learn to love themselves rather than change in order to be like everyone else.”

THE BLURB

Being Max isn’t easy. He’s just so different from every other foal at the farm. Momma Milly Mare protects her baby and showers him with tons of love, convinced that what makes him different is what makes him special. Sure of his mother’s love, Max still struggles with being stared at by disapproving eyes. When all the other foals find themselves in danger, it’s Max who triumphs and shows them what makes him So very… Max!
