Transformational leader, Joseph M. Plummer, DM, FASCRS, FACS, is inspiring change and finding success every step of the way. Dr. Plummer serves as a Professor of Surgery (General and Colorectal) at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), and Head of the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anesthesia, and Intensive Care at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus.
Dr. Plummer is recognized for his practical expertise in the surgical management of patients with colorectal diseases, specifically as they relate to the benign and malignant transformational changes. He has clinical and translational research expertise in these areas. In addition, Dr. Plummer has the leadership, training, and motivation to successfully collaborate with local and international colleagues with the expertise to train surgeon-scientists and build a stronger academic environment at UWI.
His research interests and collaborations are directed towards innovative strategic mechanistic studies of colorectal diseases including colorectal cancer, its prevention and treatment with minimally invasive surgery and introduction of enhanced recovery protocols. Dr. Plummer is primarily focused on improving the management and understanding of the epigenetic mechanisms of these diseases with an emphasis on personalized precision care, including modified radiation protocols to suit Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC).
A thought leader, Dr. Plummer operates as the Assistant Editor of the West Indian Medical Journal and is a member of the Association of West Indian Gastroenterologists, and a council member of the Association of Surgeons in Jamaica.
